A large polychrome scene depicting the death of the empress Messalina of Rome. Lined.

Partly harder wear, slightly dirty, repairs and weawoven areas. Reduced, a later secondary border.

When Messalina was confronted about the accusations of high treason against her husband emperor Claudius, she took refuge in the gardens of Lucullus. The Praetorian Guard confronted the empress there and she was offered the option of ending her own life. When this became too much for her, she was cut down by one of the officers of the guard.
