"1986 besökte Ulf Trotzig Island i tre veckor. Denna resa inspirerade honom till en serie målningar, varav Sprickan är en. Det är ett trädlöst gult landskap med slätter och vulkaner. Det gula attackeras häftigt av ett svart gap. Fåglar seglar över landskapet. Det finns inga träd. Landskapet är öde, öppet och ointagligt på samma gång. Ett urlandskap - motsats till de kantrade utopierna från 1970-talet. I Sprickan visas ett monumentalt landskap, som fråntar ordet utopi all dess mening."
