Målningen skildrar örlogsskeppet Öland, som 1704 kommenderats ut för att skydda handelsfartyg i Nordsjön och Engelska kanalen. Den 27 juli samma år mötte fartyget en engelsk eskader om nio skepp vid Orfordness på Englands ostkust. Det närmaste av dem, 50-kanonersskeppet Worcester, avfyrade två skott mot Öland.
