Pelle Swedlund was born in 1865 in Gävle, Sweden. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1889-92), Swedlund travelled to Paris where he met Paul Gauguin and together they experimented with creating woodcuts. According to tradition, the current portrait is said to depict Paul Gauguin.
