More information

Hjalmar Lundbohm (1855 - 1926) was a Swedish geologist, chemist, business leader, patron, and art collector. He was the first manager at Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), the state-owned Swedish mining company in Kiruna. Lundbohm contributed significantly to the shaping of the new community of Kiruna. Lundbohm travelled extensivly in business and made the long sea journey to the USA six times. He was a good friend of Princes Gustaf Adolf and Eugen. His great interest in art led him to become close friends with the era's prominent Swedish artists Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Albert Engström, and Christian Eriksson. In his home, Lundbohmsgården in Kiruna, a significant art collection was formed.

In 1920, when Hjalmar Lundbohm turned 65, he left his position as manager in Kiruna and retired. On October 6 of the same year, he left the community of Kiruna and, together with his good friends Prince Eugen and Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, as well as adjutant Hugo Cederschiöld, travelled around the countries bordering the Mediterranean, returning to Sweden only a year later.

Hjalmar Lundbohm passed away in 1926. The funeral service was held at Hedvig Eleonora Church in Stockholm. Thereafter, the coffin was transported to Kiruna in a specially built railway carriage.

As part of the transformation of Kiruna, Lundbohmsgården was moved to Luossavaara in 2017.

More about Bruno Liljefors

Bruno Liljefors is the Swedish artist best known for his nature and animal motifs, especially in dramatic situations. Liljefors started with studies at the Academy of Arts in 1879, and continued 1882 in Düsseldorf where the studies revolved around animal painting. The journey then continued to Venice, Rome, Naples, Paris and Grez. Once back in Sweden, he began to draw and paint animals, especially cats and small birds, from the beginning in intimate interaction with nature. He then moved on to broader depictions of wild animals and nature, of seascapes with seabirds and of dramatic scenes of battles between birds. Liljefors is known as our country's foremost animal painter with a large production. Liljefors depicted, in contrast to the "idyllic" animal painting, the animals everyday life with a focus on movement, anatomy and their adaptation to the landscape. This is where the greatness of his painting lies, in the ability to show the animals in their proper environment. He has achieved this by hunting and observing. Well-known works of art are the paintings "Rävfamilj" (1886) and "Havsörnar" (1897), as well as the sculpture "Lek" (1930) at Stockholm Stadium. Liljefors is mainly represented at the National Museum, Waldemarsudde and the Thielska gallery in Stockholm.
