Stålsmycken blev trendiga och populära under 1800-talet, särskilt bland medelklassen. I England och Frankrike tillverkades hela garnityr med diadem, kammar, örhängen och broscher. De tillverkades av små, slipade ståldelar som gav ett gnistrande intryck – ett elegant och prisvärt alternativ till ädelmetaller. Idag är stålsmycken uppskattade samlarföremål med både historiskt och estetiskt värde. Ett känt exempel är det magnifika kungliga ståldiademet.
