A turquoise glazed figure of Guanyin, Ming dynasty (1368-1644).

The deity seated in rajalilasana on a throne, one hand in bhumisparsamudra resting on the raised knee and the other lowered in varadamudra on the lap, dressed in loosely draped robes opening at the chest to reveal elaborate beaded necklaces, hair piled up in a high chignon all set in front of a flaming mandorla with a water sprinkler and a bird at the shoulder level of the deity. Glazed in vibrant shades of turquoise and blue leaving the figures' bodies and attributes unglazed. Height 29.2 cm. Width 14 cm. Depth 11 cm.

Provenance

Traugot collection no 1521.

From the Collection of Ivan Traugott. (1871-1952). Thence by descent within the family. Traugott was a Swedish businessman and important art collector. An early member of the China club, investor in the Karlbeck consortium and good friend and sponsor of Johan Gunnar Andersson in the early 20th century. A large part of his collections can be seen today at Nationalmuseum and East Asian Museum in Stockholm.
