Helena Blomqvist's art bears the dual characteristics of philosophical contemplation and cleverly twisted humour. There is always another perspective, another interpretation. The images move through a dark fairy-tale world where surreal visions of the future are mixed with the romantic photography of earlier times, and the mood swings between poetry and terror-filled apocalypse. Blomqvist stages her own worlds with her own props, in large photomontages. She has been strongly influenced by the existential questions of our time, the environment, and the climate threat.
In the image titled "Last Night for the Last Golden Frog," a solitary golden frog is seen beneath a star-studded night sky. "This little frog lived in the mountains of Costa Rica until the climate changed. In the 1980s, the last male was found searching for a female that did not exist," Helena Blomqvist has recounted. Alone, the frog hops through the desiccated landscape. Is it written in the stars that his species will become one of the approximately 130,000 species that humanity has driven to extinction so far?
