The Austrian artist Christoph Schmidberger's oil paintings and pencil drawings revolve around the power and omnipotence of youthful sexuality. As a viewer, one is drawn to the smooth skin and unpretentious bodies, which are at once acutely aware of their allure and yet still bear the innocence of childhood. A rather unsettling voyeuristic position for the observer, then. The poses are recognisable from art history, with classical motifs such as The Sleeping Venus or charming boy satyrs. But innocence seems forever lost. Christoph Schmidberger's images make us aware of the post-pornographic media world we inhabit. And he does so in a skillful and seductive manner.
