The Omega Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957 as a professional chronograph designed for timing motorsport. Its history took a legendary turn in 1969, when it became the first watch worn on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. Early Speedmasters were powered by the revered caliber 321, later replaced in 1968 by the caliber 861, which continued into the 1990s. During the 80s, case production was entrusted to the Swiss manufacturer C.R.S. (Charles-Rodolphe Spillmann & Cie).
