"Towards the end of summer, the atmosphere was oppressive - a threatening stillness hung in the air - one could see the boats creeping along the coast to keep out of the minefields in neutral waters. On September 1, the Second World War broke out. Fish bones and beach finds were painted into a modern Golgotha with pine tools.
