A massive pair of famille rose 'figural' baluster vases, Qing dynasty, 19th century.

Baluster shape with twin dragon handles, painted around the body in bright famille rose colours depicting a vivid scene with figures from a Chinese classic novel. Height 73 cm.

Restored.

Large-scale vases with impressive decoration came to prominence in the Qianlong reign, and the tradition carried on in the 19th century. Often the inspiration for the decoration were from classical novels of Chinese literature such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
