Otto Nordenskjöld's Vega Medal, The Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, 1904.

18k gold. Designed by the royal coin and medal engraver Lea Ahlborn (1826-97). The obverse features a depiction of the muse of science against the backdrop of the ship Vega's return in 1880, while the reverse bears the inscription: "Svenska sällskapet för antropologi och geografi" along with "O. Nordenskjöld" within an oak and laurel wreath. Diameter approximately 56mm, weight approximately 111 grams.

Provenance

Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928), Swedish geologist, polar explorer, and adventurer, leader of the first Swedish Antarctic expedition 1901-04, awarded to him in 1904 with Johan Gunnar Andersson as co-medallist,
thence by descent.
