A fine large-eared walrus-hilted Yatagan, Ottoman empire probably Ioannina, Epirus.

signed Al Haj Nuh, dated 1231 / 1814-15 AD. Single leaf with a double longitudinal fold near the blunt side. The leaf is elegantly decorated in gold damask with two palmette motifs – one simple and one emerging from a diamond shape. These flank three overlapping calligraphic cartouches in naskh script that surround a round, lobed medallion with a calligraphic diagram shaped like a six-pointed star. At the base of the leaf, there is a pattern of foliage. Length 73 cm.
