More information

French Savonnerie carpets of the 19th century carry forward the opulent tradition established at the court of Louis XIV. Originally woven for royal residences and diplomatic interiors, they are distinguished by lushly modelled bouquets, scrolling acanthus leaves and prominent central medallions, typically rendered in a soft yet saturated palette. During the 19th century the workshops maintained the classic Baroque and Rococo vocabulary while introducing a slightly lighter touch and greater decorative freedom. Carpets from this period are prized today for their refined blend of historical continuity and 19th-century elegance.
