More information

This rare carpet features a depiction of Timur, also known as Tamerlane (1336–1405), the charismatic ruler who founded the Timurid Empire. From his capital in Samarkand, Timur created a dominion that spanned much of Central Asia, Persia, and into the Middle East. He was both a formidable conqueror and a great patron of the arts and architecture. Under his reign, Samarkand flourished as one of the foremost cultural and scientific centres of the Islamic world, paving the way for the rich Timurid Renaissance. To portray a historic figure of such stature within a carpet is highly unusual and imbues the piece with profound symbolic significance, serving as both a work of art and a vessel of historical memory.
