The Wedding of Bacchus and Ariadne

Relined canvas 71 x 89 cm.

More information

When the god of wine Dionysius (Bacchus) arrived on the island of Naxos he fell in love with Ariadne, the beautiful daughter of King Minos of Crete, who had been abandoned by Theseus (sailing away in the distance). Here Hymen, god of marriage, descends on a cloud with a torch to join the god to his mortal princess.
