More information

Tom Sandberg is one of Norway's most significant photographers, and his fame has reached far beyond the country's borders. His black-and-white photography cannot be directly characterised by the subjects he chooses—there is no typical object here. It can range from portraits and nudes to natural landscapes or simply inanimate objects. Instead, one could say that all his images are characterised by extraordinary sharpness, almost glass-like transparency, and his incredible ability to evoke the nuances of the grayscale seems endless.

In Tom Sandberg's gaze, everything is transformed into something sacred, regardless of what it is: a newborn child, a nude study, or here, an abandoned black pipe. In the water reflections, with droplets visible through the ring formations, the rain-heavy sky is glimpsed. Cloud formations, atmosphere, airplanes, and the earth seen from high above are themes that have recurred in Tom Sandberg's powerful and distinctive artistry, where the subject and object are always closely intertwined.

Tom Sandberg lives and works in Oslo and Paris. He studied in England under the American photographer Thomas J Cooper. He has had solo exhibitions at some of the world's most prestigious art venues, including PS1, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Astrup Fearnley. His photographs are represented in collections such as the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the National Museum of Art, Oslo, and Magasin 3 in Stockholm.
