Helene Schmitz, "Thinking Like a Mountain", 2018, illustrated.
In the project ‘Thinking Like a Mountain,’ Helene Schmitz explores how forests, bedrock, rivers, and hot springs are utilised as natural resources in Sweden and Iceland. Through her photographs, she shows landscapes where human presence is palpable but often invisible – like tracks in the ground, lines in the mountains, pipes winding across lava fields. The beautiful and evocative images depict the silence of nature, human exploitation and the boundless movement towards ‘green’ capitalism. The photographs have been published in a book by Max Ström Förlag, where they are complemented by texts by researchers and authors who highlight ecological, historical and philosophical perspectives on the visible and hidden aspects of the landscape.
