The "Hamletmachine" chair was designed by Robert Wilson in 1986 for the eponymous play which premiered at New York University that same year. The chair was then produced in a numbered edition by French company XO from 1987 to 1995. The exact number of pieces produced isn’t precisely known but between 250 and 260 pieces were made.
Robert Wilson was an American director, playwright, set designer, and artist. Wilson gained recognition for his conceptual productions and has been acclaimed worldwide for his distinctive and minimalist aesthetic.
