Provenance

Information from the seller, a 90-year-old former rally driver and co-driver.

At one point, Håkan Sandin, owner of Trend AB, called me and offered to sell me a Heuer Monte Carlo that had been in the Amazon that Carl-Magnus Skogh and Lennart Berggren won the Acropolis Rally with in 1965. Håkan owned that car but converted it into a track car, and on the way to Skarpnäck, the car caught fire and burned up. Fortunately, Håkan had removed "everything unnecessary" from the car, including the Heuer watch. Unfortunately, the crown was missing, but I still bought the watch on Friday, December 17, 1999. After a while, Håkan got in touch and told me that he had found the crown, which he sent to me. When the crown was removed, a small lever arm with the number 8223 was damaged, which I managed to source from the parts dealer Sven Lindell. The watchmaker Frank Karlsson was able to complete the repair. All's well that ends well.

The Acropolis Rally in 1965 was a historic event for Swedish motorsport, marked by Carl-Magnus Skogh's victory in a Volvo Amazon. This was one of the most prestigious successes for Volvo during the rally era of the 1960s.

Winners: Carl-Magnus Skogh and co-driver Lennart Berggren won the event in a Volvo 122S (Amazon).

The Acropolis Rally was known as "the Rally of the Gods" and was characterised by very tough gravel roads, dust, and extremely demanding conditions for both drivers and cars. Skogh was one of Volvo's top drivers, and the victory in Greece was one of his greatest achievements.
