A parcel-gilt sterling silver beaker, the so called 'Byzantine model', Lund, Sweden 1941.

Straight sides, gadrooned foot, wave band decor and at the top a lambrequin decor. Height 21 cm, weight approx. 705 g.

Worn gilding.

Kersti Holmquist, "The Silversmith Wiwen Nilsson", Lund 1990, p. 130. Wiwen himself referred to this style as "Byzantine". The form is reminiscent of Swedish 18th century.

Wiwen Nilsson was a Swedish designer born in Copenhagen. He studied at his father's workshop, as well as in Germany, Denmark, and France. Nilsson is primarily known for his objects created in silver with geometric, clean, and austere forms. Nilsson debuted at the Gothenburg Exhibition in 1923. At the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, he had his major breakthrough, and his innovative modernism was a success. Nilsson created, among other things, jewellery, table silver, and services.
