More information

The Spanish sculptor and illustrator Baltasar Lobo is known for his elegant, abstract sculptures that gracefully combine modernist simplicity with classical themes. Lobo moved to Paris during the Spanish Civil War, where he joined the city's growing artistic community. Inspired by Cubism and influenced by artists such as Picasso and Brâncuși, Lobo's work evolved from figurative representations to increasingly abstract forms, often centred around maternal themes and harmonious, organic shapes. His distinctive sculptures, characterised by flowing lines and smooth surfaces, reflect a timeless elegance that cements his place in modern art history.

In Paris, Lobo also became friends with the Swedish sculptor Liss Eriksson and his wife, the painter Britta Reich Eriksson. This led to Lobo participating in a group exhibition in Stockholm and Oslo in 1948, organised by the Norwegian and Swedish Spain Committees for Spanish artists in exile. In connection with the exhibition, Lobo got to know the family of Ingrid and Conny Andersson in Björkhagen. Conny Andersson had volunteered in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. At Galerie Blanche in Stockholm, Lobo had his first solo exhibition in Sweden three years later, in 1951. In 1977, Lobo attended the inauguration of La Mano, Liss Eriksson's sculpture in memory of the Spanish volunteers, located on Katarinavägen. In a newly established park between Björkhagen subway station and Markus Church, Lobo's sculpture Motherhood has been on display since 2016, a donation from Liss Eriksson's friends' association.
