The French artist Philippe Dereux was born into a modest family of shopkeepers. He trained as a teacher and taught at the same school in Villeurbanne until his retirement in 1973, while maintaining his interest in art. During a school holiday in Vence in 1955, he met Jean Dubuffet, who inspired Dereux with his collages of wings and leaves. A few years later, Dereux began creating his own compositions using plant remnants and skins from fruits and vegetables.
To color his pieces, he used walnut stain, oil and gouache. Details on his methods can be found in Le petit traité des épluchures (the little textbook on peelings), published in 1966.
