A blue and white 'scholars' brush pot/bitong, Qing dynasty, Kangxi (1662-1722).

Decorated in underglaze blue with two central scenes depicting the literati on an outing in nature with attendants preparing for them to engage in scholarly pursuits, one can see a wrapped qin intrument, books, and other things being brought along. The countersunk base is inscribed with an apocryphal Chenghua mark. Height 15 cm. Diameter 18 cm.

Property of a private Swedish collector, purchased by the present owners in Stockholm at auction in the early 1920's thence by descent.
