Anton Michelsen (1809-1877) was born in Odense and moved to Copenhagen in 1830, where he worked for various goldsmith workshops in the city for the following eleven years. Between 1834 and 1835, he was employed by Jørgen Balthasar Dalhoff, who helped him secure a scholarship to travel to Berlin and later to Paris, where he worked for the firm Mention et Wagner and learned enamelling. In 1840, he passed his master’s examination, and the following year he established his own premises in Copenhagen. In 1855, he exhibited at the Paris Exposition universelle with a modest assortment of tea and coffeesets, cutlery, and wine coolers.
