The history of the brilliant cut dates back to the development of diamond cutting techniques during the Renaissance. Early diamond cuts, such as the point cut and table cut, focused mainly on preserving the gemstone’s weight rather than maximizing its brilliance. During the 17th century, advances in gem-cutting technology allowed craftsmen to experiment with additional facets, improving the reflection and refraction of light within the diamond. Today, diamond quality is commonly evaluated by the standards established by the Gemological Institute of America. The GIA grades diamonds according to the internationally recognized “Four Cs”: carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. Diamond color is graded on a scale from D to Z, where D represents a completely colorless diamond.
