More information

The navette, or marquise-shaped diamond, has its origins in 18th-century France. According to popular legend, King Louis XV commissioned a diamond cut that would resemble the lips of his mistress, Madame de Pompadour. The result was an elongated, pointed shape that became known as the marquise cut. Over time, this distinctive form evolved with advances in diamond cutting techniques, improving its symmetry and brilliance. The navette or marquise cut remained popular through different eras, particularly in vintage and royal-inspired jewelry, and continues to be admired today for its elegant history and unique silhouette.
