The painting is executed after an earlier image by David von Krafft and originally formed part of the portrait gallery of the von Fersen family portraits that were installed in the great hall at Ljung in Östergötland. Both the exterior and the interior were designed by Jean Eric Rehn in the 1770s. Clearly, Rehn had to rely on already existing portraits, and the auction's painting is visible in a preserved drawing of the hall's inner wall.
