Axel Gauffin, "Simon Marcus Larsson 1825-1864", 1908, catalogue of the artist's works, under the year 1854, possibly cat. no. 165, p. 6 (Sold to England for 2000 kr in the spring of 1854).
Marcus Larsson was a Swedish artist during the 19th century who became known for his dramatic landscape paintings. He often depicted stormy seas, dark forests, and powerful waterfalls, with the strength of nature at the forefront. His art is characterised by Romanticism, a style where emotions, nature, and drama were important expressions.
In several of his paintings featuring waterfalls, Marcus Larsson employs strong contrasts between light and dark to create movement and tension. The rushing water and dark cliffs convey a sense of nature's power and humanity's smallness in its presence. The brushstrokes are vibrant, and the colours are often dark and intense, making the paintings feel alive and dramatic.
Marcus Larsson studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and was inspired, among other influences, by German landscape painting. His works are now regarded as significant within Swedish art history.
