Sunset over Dalsland
Signed O. Hesselbom and dated 1900. Oil on canvas 98 x 168 cm.
Otto Hesselbom has come to be known as the painter of Dalsland, and he himself recounted that Dalsland: "with its vast waves of mountains and its many wide waters, appears through the wonderful simple purity of the lines almost stylised monumental in places." And when Hesselbom painted the nature of Dalsland, it felt, against the backdrop of all the impressions he had received from other regions, as if he was not only trying to depict the nature of Dalsland but also that of Sweden. Hesselbom's monumental and famous painting "Vårt land. Motiv från Dalsland" from 1902 in the Nationalmuseum collection can be said to be one of the central paintings in our art historical heritage. The motif is a magnificent view over Lake Ånimmen in Dalsland seen from the Vingnäs mountains. The painting is the most central in Hesselbom's oeuvre, and he returned to the motif several times and in various versions until his death. The painting in the auction shows the same landscape from Dalsland in twilight. Dated as early as 1900, it is perhaps one of the first variants he created of this expansive and wonderfully beautiful depiction of our country.
