More information

The summer sun spreads its warm light over the Uppland landscape. Amidst blooming daisies, the cat rests after a successful hunt – a scene that reminds us that life in nature is ultimately about survival. This perspective became central to Bruno Liljefors's artistic career during the 1880s and 1890s, a time when Darwin's theory of evolution and ideas about the struggle for existence shaped the intellectual climate of the era. For Liljefors, nature was not only beautiful and harmonious but also a place where life and death constantly coexisted.

The auction's painting ”Katt och sädesärla” was executed in the summer of 1893, during one of Liljefors's most successful periods. After study trips in Europe, he had settled in Kvarnbo outside Uppsala and developed into one of his time's most promising and innovative Swedish artists. He became a central figure in plein air painting and devoted his life to depicting the Swedish landscape and its fauna with an unusual presence and precision. Through his direct encounters with wildlife, he could convey movement, light, and atmosphere with swift and confident brushwork.

The cat became one of Liljefors's most significant motifs and an animal with which he felt a particular affinity. As a young man, he spent much time drawing and studying the anatomy and movements of animals. He was especially fascinated by the cat's agility, strength, and balance – qualities he himself aspired to and which inspired him to lead an active life in nature. A cat that was particularly dear to him was Jeppe. He became his best friend, a loyal companion who often posed for some of the artist's most outstanding and beloved works. To depict animals credibly, he sought to approach them on their own terms. He moved through forests and fields from the animals' perspective and allowed this viewpoint to influence his compositions, which often feel like spontaneous glimpses of nature itself. Japanese woodcuts and contemporary Japonisme also influenced his visual language and the way he composed his subjects.

However, Liljefors never portrayed wildlife as idyllic or romanticised. For him, hunting and the struggle among animals were a natural part of the order of nature, not something cruel or morally charged. Unlike many other artists of the same period, he did not anthropomorphise his animal subjects. Instead, he allowed the viewer to experience the drama, stillness, or tension in the scenes for themselves.

In the painting ”Katt och sädesärla”, the cat emerges both as a predator and a hedonist. It lies relaxed in the summer warmth but is simultaneously alert and ready to react in an instant. The blooming dandelion with its delicate seed heads that can be whisked away by the wind at any moment can be interpreted as a symbol of life's transience. There is no sentimentality and no contrivance here – only the rhythm of nature itself and its relentless conditions. Through his presence in the motif and his deep understanding of the animal world, Bruno Liljefors succeeded in creating depictions of nature that still lack comparison within Swedish art.

More about Bruno Liljefors

Bruno Liljefors is the Swedish artist best known for his nature and animal motifs, especially in dramatic situations. Liljefors started with studies at the Academy of Arts in 1879, and continued 1882 in Düsseldorf where the studies revolved around animal painting. The journey then continued to Venice, Rome, Naples, Paris and Grez. Once back in Sweden, he began to draw and paint animals, especially cats and small birds, from the beginning in intimate interaction with nature. He then moved on to broader depictions of wild animals and nature, of seascapes with seabirds and of dramatic scenes of battles between birds. Liljefors is known as our country's foremost animal painter with a large production. Liljefors depicted, in contrast to the "idyllic" animal painting, the animals everyday life with a focus on movement, anatomy and their adaptation to the landscape. This is where the greatness of his painting lies, in the ability to show the animals in their proper environment. He has achieved this by hunting and observing. Well-known works of art are the paintings "Rävfamilj" (1886) and "Havsörnar" (1897), as well as the sculpture "Lek" (1930) at Stockholm Stadium. Liljefors is mainly represented at the National Museum, Waldemarsudde and the Thielska gallery in Stockholm.
