An inscribed and well carved agate 'Scholar and attendant' pendant, Qing dynasty, probably 19th century.

The smoky amber toned stone displaying several defined areas of dark brown colouring, skilfully utilized to pick out the highlights in a scene with two men and a horse in a landscape setting the other side with a gnarled pine tree growing from the side of a rocky overhang against an background of contorted rocks. One side with a four character inscription. The inscription reads 白雲深處 (Baiyun shen chu) which could be translated as 'Deep Among the White Clouds'. Measure 5.2x3.8 cm.

Purchased in Stockholm, Signe S Lindström Jewels & Art Trade 1966. Thence by descent within the family.
