Director Roy Andersson describes his collaboration with Walter Hirsch in the book Fotografier 1960–2003 Walter Hirsch, Bokförlaget Arena:
‘My first feature film, En kärlekshistoria, was shot in the summer of 1969. At that time, it was customary for a stills photographer to document the work on a film production. Europa Film engaged Walter Hirsch on someone’s recommendation.
I did not know him, but I soon realised that it was a wise choice. It was a commissioned assignment for the film’s launch. Both the film and the stills were received with enormous enthusiasm. Even today, more than forty years later, the film poster featuring Walter’s photograph is highly sought after and is continually being reprinted in new editions. [...] But Walter Hirsch did not photograph solely on commission. It is his independent photographic art that I find impressive.
Describing it is, in fact, not the easiest thing to do. Because it is so open and generous. I would call it inexhaustible.’
