More about Hans von Klier

Hans von Klier was an influential industrial and furniture designer, born in Tetschen (now Děčín in the Czech Republic). He grew up in the Sudetenland before moving to West Germany after the Second World War. He began his career as an electromechanical engineer and subsequently studied industrial design at the prestigious Ulm School of Design.

In the 1960s, von Klier moved to Milan and became a key figure at Ettore Sottsass’s studio, where he designed a range of pioneering office products for Olivetti, including typewriters and calculating machines. His work during this period helped shape the elegant, modern corporate identity that came to define Olivetti’s global brand. During the 1970s and 1980s, von Klier expanded his practice into furniture design, creating sophisticated, architecturally inspired tables, chests of drawers, boxes, sideboards and lighting fixtures.
