More information

It was Nick Brandt’s earlier career as a film director that first brought him to Tanzania, where he was invited to direct the video for Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. Once there, Brandt was overwhelmed by the country’s extraordinary landscapes and magnificent wildlife. The experience proved transformative, and in 2003 he abandoned his career as a director to devote himself entirely to photography.

Brandt offers an intimate glimpse into the private world of wild animals, capturing his subjects with remarkable detail and sensitivity. It is difficult to regard Brandt simply as a wildlife photographer; his images have more in common with portraiture, conveying an unusually profound sense of intimacy. His background in film is evident in his compelling panoramas, where vast landscapes provide the stage upon which the lives of the animals unfold. The photograph offered in this auction depicts a lioness in a moment of majestic repose.

For a photographer, light and timing are everything. When these two elements converge, extraordinary images can emerge. Brandt rarely works with telephoto lenses, believing that the closer one can come to an animal, the greater the possibility of capturing its individual character. In an interview with National Geographic, Brandt explained: “I believe the proximity to the animals makes an enormous difference in the photographer’s ability to portray their personality. You don’t take a portrait of a human being from thirty metres away and expect the photograph to reveal their soul; you move closer.”

Brandt’s black-and-white photographs are rendered in subtle sepia tones, recalling the appearance of mid-nineteenth-century daguerreotypes. These visual references lend his images a haunting sense of time, as though the animals and landscapes they inhabit already belong to a vanishing world.

Over the years, Nick Brandt has established himself as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary wildlife photography. Across a succession of photographic series, he has continued to develop the visual language that first became his signature with the early-2000s project On This Earth, A Shadow Falls. His profound concern for the planet’s endangered species has grown increasingly central to his practice, shaping both the subjects he chooses to photograph and the evolving character of his artistic expression.
