Gérard Rigot was a French artist who worked in Paris. In his youth, Rigot held various jobs in photographic laboratories and the construction industry. He also lived and worked as a teacher in Algiers for a period, and was strongly influenced by the beauty, colours and textures of the landscape.
As an artist, he has primarily devoted himself to painting since 1959, but after 1978 he also began creating furniture and sculptures. He is particularly known for his imaginative furniture designs, known as ‘animeubles’ – a combination of animal and furniture forms. That same year, 1978, at the age of 49, he moved to the countryside outside Toulouse. Initially inspired by his cat, Rigot began sculpting and painting furniture in oak and pine. His furniture is easy to identify, displaying a humorous and colourful combination of form and function.
