More information

In "Conscientia" (2014), Ulla Wiggen combines her characteristic attention to detail with an interest in the internal structures of the human body. At the centre of the composition, the brain appears in cross-section, meticulously rendered in shades of yellow and ochre with red contour lines. Against the deep blue background, a network of fine lines and small golden forms spreads across the image. The contrast between the organic shapes and the graphically constructed pictorial space lends the composition a distinctive visual character.

Wiggen first attracted attention in the 1960s for her meticulously executed paintings of electronic components and technical systems. In her later work, her interest in complex structures has shifted towards human anatomy, with the brain and nervous system occupying a central place.

In "Conscientia" the precision that characterises her early work reappears in an image world where scientific observation meets a more philosophical subject.

The title "Conscientia" is Latin for “consciousness” or “awareness” and relates to the painting’s central motif. The anatomical structure of the brain is depicted with great precision, while the surrounding network evokes the branching pathways of the nervous system and the connections that shape human inner life. The gold leaf lends the painting a subtle lustre, accentuating the interplay of colour, line and form.

In recent years, Ulla Wiggen’s artistic practice has received significant international attention. In 2022, she participated in the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale, and her works are represented in collections including that of Moderna Museet in Stockholm. "Conscientia" is a representative example of her anatomically oriented painting, demonstrating how her longstanding interest in science, technology and complex systems has evolved into a personal and independent visual language.
