More information

Astri Taube was the daughter of court foundry worker Herman Bergman (1869–1954) and Emilia (Mélen) Tholff (1872–1962). Astri was the eldest of four siblings. Through her father’s art foundry, she came into contact with all the leading Swedish artists of the time at an early age, and Carl Milles was her godfather. She received a thorough art education in Sweden and then travelled to Paris in 1920 to continue her studies.

Upon returning to Stockholm, she studied at Konstakademien (the Royal Academy of Fine Arts), where, among others, her godfather Milles was one of her teachers. During her time in Paris, she met her future husband, Evert Taube. They married in 1925.

In 1895, Herman Bergman founded H Bergman konstgjuteri in Norrmalm, Stockholm. In 1914, he opened a shop on Birger Jarlsgatan in Stockholm, selling everything from sculptures and lamps to other interior designs, such as mirrors. The shop later moved to Kungsgatan, where it remained until the 1930s.
