Provenance

The Wendt family.

Wilhelm Wendt founded and owned Stensmölla Kemiska Tekniska Industri, which later became Skånska Ättikfabriken. Vinegar, tar, charcoal and wood alcohol were produced here.

In 1918, the company invented Scandinavia’s first plastic material, isolite.

The company became Scandinavia’s largest manufacturer of plastic materials and, under the name Perstorp, became synonymous in the 1960s with laminated, patterned table tops.

The lamp originally belonged to one of Wilhelmina “Tiddits”’ siblings.

More information

In 1922, the architect and designer Per Torndahl moved to Perstorp. He became the artistic director of the lighting company and established Atelier Torndahl, which was housed in one of the old buildings belonging to Skånska Ättikfabriken.

Wilhelm Wendt’s daughter, Wilhelmina “Tiddit” Wendt, worked alongside Per Torndahl in the studio. It was there that she found the inspiration to pursue further studies in design. When Per Torndahl closed the studio in Perstorp in 1926 and returned to Stockholm, Wilhelmina moved there with him to study at Högre konstindustriella skolan.

Atelier Torndahl produced lavish, artistic light fittings and lamps in materials such as copper, brass and silver-plated metal. Wilhelmina Wendt was closely involved in their production, and according to family history, she designed several of the renowned Swedish Grace light fittings that are now sold under the name Atelier Torndahl.

Atelier Torndahl thus served as the starting point for Wilhelmina Wendt’s career. She later returned to Perstorp to continue working with Isolit, creating silver inlays in various types of Isolit objects, known as “Perstorp silver”.
