At the farm
Signed S. Rathsman. Oil on panel 37.5 x 46 cm
Siri Rathsman has often been regarded as one of the most radical artists in Swedish art of the first half of the 20th century, and is perhaps best known for the non-figurative painting she developed during the 1930s. This farmyard scene offers an example of her earlier work, though with stronger elements of naivism than many of her paintings from the 1920s. The way naivism and realism meet in this composition makes it an intriguing piece of the puzzle in understanding Rathsman’s artistic practice.
