Untitled
Signed Joh. S. Kjarval. Oil on canvas laid on glass, 35 x 56 cm.
Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval (1885–1972) is one of Iceland’s most significant artists and a pioneer of modern Icelandic art. Born into modest circumstances, he moved at the age of four to a foster family in Borgarfjörður, where Iceland’s magnificent landscape may have sparked his artistic interest at an early age.
After working as a fisherman for several years, Kjarval was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1912. There, he encountered the modern artistic movements of the time, from Impressionism to Cubism and Futurism, which helped shape his personal and progressive visual language.
When Kjarval returned to Iceland in 1922, he became a leading figure in modern art in his home country. His distinctive landscape painting attracted particular attention, combining Iceland’s dramatic natural scenery with legends, mysticism and an almost visionary sensibility. From the late 1920s onwards, he increasingly devoted himself to these subjects, spending periods in the countryside, close to the landscapes that inspired him.
Kjarval’s artistic legacy has had a decisive influence on Icelandic visual art. In 1973, Kjarvalsstaðir opened at the Reykjavík Art Museum, dedicated to his life and work.
