More information

Toko Shinoda was one of Japan’s most distinguished modern artists, celebrated for her distinctive fusion of traditional Japanese calligraphy and abstract expression. Throughout a career spanning more than seven decades, she developed a visual language that was entirely her own, combining the discipline and spirituality of East Asian ink painting with the freedom and immediacy of modern abstraction.
Born in Dalian, China, and raised in Tokyo, Shinoda began studying calligraphy at an early age. Rather than remaining within its traditional conventions, she gradually transformed the art of the brush into a form of abstract expression. Her works are not intended to communicate words or fixed meanings, but to evoke emotions, movement and atmosphere through the interplay of ink, gesture and empty space. Every brushstroke carries its own energy, while the spaces between the marks are equally essential to the composition. Her artistic vision transcended the boundaries between East and West, tradition and modernity, painting and calligraphy. Today, she is recognised as a pioneering figure in modern Japanese art.
The three works presented in this sale are “Dawn” from 1965, “Accomplishment” from 1986 and “Journey” from 1990. They all offer an opportunity to experience Shinoda’s artistic language across three decades and together, they reflect her enduring fascination with movement, stillness, balance and the expressive potential of the brush.
“Dawn” belongs to a period when Shinoda was establishing her distinctive position within the international art world. The title suggests the emergence of light and the beginning of something new, an idea that resonates with the artist’s exploration of space, gesture and the delicate tension between presence and absence. “Accomplishment” the largest of the three works, invites an especially immersive encounter with Shinoda’s art. Its scale gives the composition a strong physical presence, allowing the viewer to experience the sweep and rhythm of her brushwork more directly.
The artwork “Journey” is made with gold paint, giving it a luminous and elegant appearance. The gold adds depth and texture to the abstract forms, creating a sense of warmth and richness.
All three works come through the Tolman Collection in Tokyo, a gallery with a particularly significant place in the international history of contemporary Japanese printmaking. Founded in 1972 by Norman and Mary Tolman, the gallery has devoted more than five decades to presenting Japanese artists to audiences around the world.
The Tolman Collection maintained a close and longstanding relationship with Toko Shinoda, representing her work for decades and publishing hundreds of exclusive editions over more than forty years. This collaboration played an important role in introducing her art to international collectors and museums, while helping to establish a wider appreciation of contemporary Japanese printmaking.
