More information

Born in 1929 into a family of artists, André Brasilier developed an early affinity for the visual arts. At the age of twenty, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and by the time he completed his studies, he had received several distinctions, including the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1953. His artistic language is distinguished by vivid colour, fluid movement and a harmonious simplification of form. The expressive use of colour recalls Henri Matisse, while the balanced compositions and decorative sensibility reveal an affinity with the aesthetic traditions of Japanese prints.

Throughout his long career, horses have remained among Brasilier’s most characteristic and enduring subjects. Fascinated by their strength, grace and dynamism, he portrays them with fluid brushwork and a lyrical sense of movement, often integrating them into landscapes that balance observation with poetic interpretation. Rather than seeking precise naturalism, Brasilier distils the essential qualities of his subjects into compositions defined by colour, rhythm and atmosphere.

Motifs depicting Central Park are relatively uncommon within Brasilier’s oeuvre, lending the subject a particular interest. One of New York’s most recognisable green spaces, Central Park offers a distinctive setting in which nature and the urban environment converge. The theme provides an intriguing variation on the pastoral landscapes and equestrian scenes more commonly associated with the artist, while remaining consistent with his enduring fascination with the relationship between horses, landscape and the rhythms of everyday life.

Through his distinctive combination of vibrant colour, simplified forms and expressive movement, Brasilier transforms familiar subjects into evocative, almost dreamlike scenes.
