Sonny Berntsson’s Collection of Carpets and Textiles

Sonny Berntsson was born in Mölndal on March 16, 1945, and lived there until the 1970s. He was married to Lill Berntsson and had three children: Helen, Robert, and Malin. In 1974, he met Sahander, and together they had a son, Davut, in 1981. His interest in carpets was sparked when he met Sahander – it started on a small scale and quickly grew. Over the years, he made several trips to Turkey, where his car was filled with clothes and toys that he distributed to children in the mountain villages. During these trips, he acquired new carpets for his collection.

Soon, his apartment in Gothenburg overflowed with carpets and fragments, each with a history he loved to share with his family and close friends. He joined the AKREP association, where everyone shared the same passion. He traded carpets for many years and also organised guided trips for carpet enthusiasts. In short, carpets became a significant part of Sonny’s life alongside his family and his work as an electrician at Volvo Cars. Sonny passed away on March 17, 2020, shortly after his family had celebrated his 75th birthday.
