Josef Frank and Friends – May Edition

Bukowskis presents one of our most popular themed auctions, featuring many of Svenskt Tenn’s highly sought-after design classics. Estrid Ericson (1894–1981) began her successful collaboration with Josef Frank (1885–1967) in the 1930s. The first major exhibition of Frank’s work for Svenskt Tenn was held in 1934 at Liljevalchs. Josef Frank went on to create numerous classics that have enhanced both private homes and public interiors, and his furniture has become an integral part of Swedish design history.

Josef Frank was a master at creating elegant and distinctive cabinet designs. He preferred them to stand on high legs, allowing the skirting boards of a room to remain visible and thereby enhancing the sense of space. This auction features one of his most popular models, the display cabinet B 2077, along with several decorative tabletop vitrines. Frank also designed a wide variety of lighting, favouring interiors illuminated by multiple smaller light sources rather than large ceiling lamps. The auction includes several of his refined and timeless lamps. Also featured are examples of Frank’s beautifully upholstered furniture, ranging from the elegant Couch daybed to various armchairs and sofas. In addition, the auction offers an unusually large selection of textiles, particularly curtains, showcasing Josef Frank’s iconic patterns.

This themed auction also includes many fine pewter objects, the material with which Estrid Ericson originally worked when she founded Svenskt Tenn in 1924. Several examples of Ericson’s pewter designs are represented in the sale, including the large lion model A 1136. The auction also features pewter objects designed by Nils Fougstedt.
