More information

As early as the 1620s, Iranian ceramicists began producing convincing copies of the Chinese porcelain that had been imported into Iran on a large scale since the late 16th century.

The form of the kendi originated in Southeast Asia, where vessels of this type were used for drinking. Chinese kendis were exported to the Middle East, where they were used, among other things, as bases for water pipes. Iranian ceramicists subsequently adopted the form and adapted it to the local ceramic tradition, resulting in vessels such as this.
