Bought at a local auction after the then deceased Axel Lehman in Hälsingland, Sweden in the 1980s. Mr Lehman founded a linen factory in Holma, Hälsingland in 1898. He married 1899 with Freja Hådell.

Carlo Bugatti was born in Milan. He studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts at a time when artists, architects, writers and poets found a sense of community in what was known as the “Scapigliati”, the bohemians. Carlo Bugatti went on to develop a highly distinctive style inspired by Moorish architecture and Japanese and African cultures. He combined various exotic materials and types of wood. He received his first major recognition at exhibitions in Milan and London in 1888. Bugatti subsequently exhibited in Turin in 1898 and in Paris in 1900, achieving a major breakthrough at the 1902 exhibition in Turin. Carlo Bugatti presented a “Snail Room”, furnished, among other pieces, with his so-called “Cobra Chairs”. In 1904, Carlo Bugatti moved with his family to Paris and sold his furniture, among other places, through the Bon Marché department store. Carlo Bugatti’s motto was: “Every object can become a work of art.” Bugatti’s business went on to become highly successful. He died in Alsace in 1940.
