More information

Laurits Tuxen came in many ways to reform the Danish art scene. He was one of the artists who introduced the new, more free, French style of painting. This also happened in Sweden at the same time and came to influence the coming generation of painters. Tuxen also became an important teacher through the academy Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler that he in 1882 started with PS Kröyer amongst others.
Tuxen began his artistic career as a marine painter and studied under Holger Drachmann. In Denmark, the sea and coastal villages is a big part of the heritage and cultural expression and have been made famous through different artists working in these areas, mostly famous the Skagen colony. In 1975 Tuxen exhibited “From Jyllands västkust” and it was noticed for its new way of depicting the subject. In this painting the theme is continued but this time in France. The viewer is invited in to take part in an endearing scene – the return of the fishermen who are also beloved husbands and fathers. This canvas is quite large so there is plenty to see and Tuxen continues telling the story in every little detail of this grand painting.
