The years in Isaac Grünewald's painting school in Stockholm in the mid-1940s only served as a springboard for Lindström. After a study trip to Florence, where he was fascinated by older masters such as Giotto and Cimabue, he already lived in Paris in 1948 where he met French modernism and was a student of, among others, André Lhote and Fernand Léger. He sought his expression through both abstract and non-figurative painting.
After the end of World War II, several new styles flourished in Europe as a reaction to the culturally lean years of the war. Bengt Lindström was inspired by the CoBrA group's expressive painting, Jean Dubuffet's art brut, and Francis Bacon's psychological world of images. These artistic encounters were redemptive for Bengt Lindström's painting. Lindström settled in France among his artistic soulmates and his art was appreciated by an international audience. The roots from the small isolated village Storsjö Kapell in Norrland, with its mysterious landscape of mountains, glistening lakes, and deep forests, are, however, constantly present in his motifs that carry streaks of natural poetry. The father was very interested in the Sami cultural heritage and only three days old, Bengt was dragged through a magic hole in a forested hill by his godfather, the Sami king Kroik, to gain strength and power. As a child, Bengt accompanied Kroik on walks through forests and mountains while the Sami king told him about northern legends and mysteries. The characters from these stories then lived on in Lindström's world of images.
Bengt Lindström is well known to the Swedish audience, but he is also a big name internationally and has regularly exhibited in galleries and museums in France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium. In addition to a large production of paintings, the graphic work with lithographs and etchings has been a large part of Bengt Lindström's creation. He has carried out a large number of public and monumental work both in Sweden and abroad. Lindström's artistic creation has also included glass, ceramics, textiles and sculpture.
